Journal #24

1. write my passions...
2. my resources...
3. what questions do i want answered?
4. my plans to access my resources...
5. possible product/performance...

initially, i know that i have a lot of passions, and it was hard for me to choose only a couple. but i chose feeding the hungry (which i know can be a bit vague, but i haven't figured out where yet) and how we will be able to survive after we run out of resources, and if we will be able to finally work together then.
i will be spending a lot of time on the internet looking up websites and checking the news for details. also, maybe doing some volunteer work so that i could be a resource too. and i'll probably email people and organizations, and do face-to-face interviews.
the questions i want answered are; 'if i make money for an organization [to feed the hungry], how will i get it to them?' 'are there already people on oahu doing this sort of thing, and if so, can i join them?' 'what can i do at home, and in my community to help with the "feeding the hungry" issue?' 'do you think that you could estimate a time where we will run out of fuel resources?'
my plans to access my resources would be through talking on the phone, emailing, and even physically going up to people to ask them about things. i'll just start off with researching online.
i think that the possible product/performance from this is that the people in my community, or on the island, would learn how they will be able to depend on themselves in the future. and maybe i'll be able to raise money to help people across the globe. i may be able to teach people how they can change their lifestyles in order to accomodate for our declining resources.
in general, i want to start being able to live more comfortably.

Hi Sophie,
I think this is a great topic and fits in with one of your other inquiries about being self-sufficient.
I think your plans are well thought out and that you'll be able to find lots of resources in the community.
You may also want to look into the concept of "subsistence lifestyle" as well as the concept of "sustainability." Subsistence lifestyle is kind of like living off the land and I think there are paople on Molokai who seek and follow that type of lifestyle.
You may also want to check with Tyler Yafuso who interviewed an artist who spent three weeks living off the land, without using any money. Tyler did a broadcast package about him and he was also featured in the local newspapers.
As far as your research about whether fuel supplies will run out, you may want to keep a unified focus and look at research about food supplies. I have heard that we actually have enough food to feed everyone on earth, but it is our poor and inequitable distribution that leaves so many to starve.
Good luck on your project. I'm looking forward to watching it develop!

Hey Mrs. S,
I've narrowed my ideas down to two things. I'm going to take your advice about looking into 'sustainability' in my own life. I was actually thinking of logging my own activities of what I do at home, and the money I spend, and how i try to be more dependent on this island; not buying processed foods from across the world, or the mainland. And then my activity would be to inform people to do it as well.
But I'm still very interested in knowing how I can feed the hungry people that are miles and miles away from me, or on this island. I want to do physical work and volunteer at food banks and hold food drives, but I know that there are already organizations that are doing it, and it would be kind of too easy to do.

I'm unsure, still, of what I want to do. Especially because the things that I'm thinking of doing might have already been done. But I will figure it out soon.

Hi Sophie!
Great thinking! I like the idea of documenting your own lifestyle and seeing how "sustainable" you would be. Have you done the "ecological footprint" test? You can find it here: http://ecofoot.org/
It tells you how "sustainable" your lifestyle is...pretty neat.

As for the work with food banks and all, don't feel that if it's "already been done" that you can't participate. After all, if you haven't experienced what these organizations do, you'll have a chance to see, firsthand, what these efforts are like...and that would be a learning experience.

Keep me updated on how you're doing...I'm really excited about your project!
